My son wrestled for Chapin Middle School this year.  It was his first year and as a 7th grader, he enjoyed it but is way behind because others have been wrestling for years.  I would like to get him on another team starting in February for additional training.  Any suggestions?

That great to hear that your son enjoys wrestling. My son was in the same situation last year (he's in 8th grade now, going to the middle school state championship this weekend, with an overall record of 43win 9loss 28pins ). He love's wrestling, So last year in the off season we got him into a wrestling club (the Citadel) and went to every tournament we could. There are tournaments thru out the off season freestyle, folk and greco. If there is not a tournament in Sc, look to see if Nc has one, we went too quiet a few good tournaments there. The key is to keep practicing and getting mat time thru out the off season. As you may know already, it also takes a big comment from mom & dad, since in most cases you will be the one waking up with him at 3 or so in the morning, driving the 3,4 or more hours to get to the tournaments for weight in's (that's half the fun). With what my son did in the off season, I would say that he caught up with most of the kids his age.
So basicly you should find a club and go to all the tournaments you can.

You can go to these sites and get tournament info.

I would start by checking with your High School Varsity coach (Coach Harmon) to see if he has anything planned for the off-season (which I believe he does).  He will also guide you to some possible places to get what you need.  If you get no results there (which I am 99.9% sure you will be satisfied with his response to you) then start looking around.  Also, I know there are things in the works to get a real coach at the MS level for next year.  Hopefully, that will all be worked out soon and that coach may be involved in the off-season workouts also.

Start from within before going out....just some solid advice!!!!  If you don't get the answers you want or like, then come back and I can give you some options in your area.
